Useful Databases
1) Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Plus with Full Text
· CINAHL is a database that provides the full text for hundreds of nursing and allied health journals (and indexing for more than 4,500 health journals) dating back to 1937 (EBSCOhost, n.d.a). Because of its focus on health evidence and information, it contains a great number resources on the subject of HIV/AIDS, especially for nurses and allied health professionals.
· CINAHL Subject Headings are available and follow the structure of the National Library of Medicine’s Medical Subject Headings (EBSCOhost, n.d.b). In order to find appropriate headings for my HIV/AIDS resource guide, click the “Suggest Subject Terms” box or look through the list of terms.
2) Consumer Health Complete (CHC)
· CHC provides health information for consumer use which is beneficial for retrieving background and epidemiological information about HIV/AIDS.
· Although there are no specified subject headings, there is an easily accessible and user-friendly Medical Dictionary that contains common searchable terms (Consumer Health Complete, n.d.).
3) Health & Wellness Resource Center
· The Health & Wellness Resource center contains consumer health information that is presented in a way that is useful for people of variable skill sets (Gale CENGAGE Learning, n.d.). My resource guide is for health professionals seeking information, so I want it to contain resources useful for health and medical students as well as long-time health educators.
· The Health & Wellness Resource Center uses the subject headings in the Gale Subject Guide. These can be searched by using the search box to find the appropriate terms (Gale, 2011).
4) OECD Health Statistics
· The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has 34 member countries (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], n.d.a) and provides international health data and statistics (OECD, n.d.b). This is a useful place to find epidemiological information and current trends in health in the United States.
· OECD Health Statistics search interface is new and does not provide subject headings.
5) ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source
· ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source is a full text database with health information for nurses, allied health professionals, and other health professionals; it was created to be a valuable resource for healthcare facilities, academic institutions, and health professionals (ProQuest, 2012). ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source provides various resources important in HIV/AIDS care.
· ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source uses medical subject headings and they can be found through search or through browsing the thesaurus.
6) PubMed
· PubMed is a free resource provided by the National Library of Medicine (“PubMed Help,” 2012). PubMed contains multiple databases, including MEDLINE, the national database containing millions of medical and life sciences journals (“PubMed Help,” 2012; U.S. National Library of Medicine [NLM], 2011). HIV/AIDS background and foreground information, in addition to best-practice guides and systematic reviews.
· The National Library of Medicine (NLM) created and updates the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for searching. In order to find appropriate terms, type what you are looking for into the search box, and change the drop-down option to MeSH.

Use combinations of the aforementioned search terms to find results relevant to your question. So, if you are looking for information about the effect of a specific drug on pregnant African American women who are HIV-positive, search the drug term in combination with terms found under "HIV," "Pregnancy," and "African American."
